The St. Louis Cardinals have made qualifying offers to outfielder Jason Heyward and righthander John Lackey, the team announced.

St. Louis had a 5 p.m. Friday deadline to extend the offers. Heyward and Lackey are both free agents and will be allowed to sign with new teams beginning Friday at midnight.

Players can either accept the offer and remain with the team next season on a one-year, $15.8 million contract, or reject it and become free to sign with any team. If another team were to sign Heyward or Lackey, St. Louis would receive a compensatory first-round pick.

Heyward, 26, hit .293 with 13 home runs, 60 RBIs and 23 stolen bases last season. Lackey, 37, posted a 2.77 ERA with a 13–10 record and 175 strikeouts in 218 innings.
