The Tampa Bay Rays claimed righthander Chase Whitley off waivers from the New York Yankees on Friday, reports Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.

Whitley, 26, underwent Tommy John surgery on May 14 after tearing his UCL at the beginning of the 2015 season.

Before sustaining the injury, Whitley made four starts and gave up nine earned runs over 19 1/3 innings with 16 strikeouts. He was 4–3 with a 5.23 ERA in 24 games in 2014.

Whitley will likely be ready to pitch at the end of the 2016 season.

The Yankees selected Whitley out of Troy University in the 15th round of the 2010 draft.
