Baltimore Orioles minor league infielder Ramon Ramirez was killed in motorcycle accident in the Dominican Republic on Saturday night, the team announced. Ramirez was 23.

Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette addressed the news in a statement Sunday:

“Our entire organization is deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic death of Ramon Ramirez. As a member of the Orioles organization, Ramon worked tirelessly to make the most of his opportunity to play professional baseball. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates, and coaches as we mourn this unimaginable loss.”

According to MASN.com, Ramirez was struck by a vehicle while he was leaving a softball game. His girlfriend, who was riding on the back of the motorcycle, survived the crash. 

Born in Santiago de los Caballeros, Ramirez signed with Baltimore as a free agent in July 2014. He would have turned 24 in February.
