SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) Manager Chip Hale's option for 2017 has been exercised by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Bob Melvin's former bench coach at Oakland, Hale is entering his second season at the helm of the Diamondbacks. The team went 79-83 last season.

Diamondbacks chief baseball officer Tony La Russa and general manager Dave Stewart have repeatedly praised the job Hale did last year.

Arizona's hopes of contending this season appear to be greatly enhanced by the acquisition of Zack Greinke in the offseason.
