Jose Reyes placed on paid leave with domestic violence case pending

Jose Reyes has been placed on paid leave until his domestic violence case is settled.

Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes has been placed on paid leave until his court case for domestic violence is settled, MLB announced Tuesday.

Reyes was arrested in Hawaii in October for allegedly grabbing his wife and shoving her into a sliding glass door at a hotel in Maui. MLB’s domestic violence policy allows the commissioner to place a player on paid suspension pending the resolution of a criminal proceeding. Reyes’s paid leave only covers the regular-season games he will miss and he will not be paid during spring training, according to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.

The Major League Baseball Players Association issued a statement regarding Reyes. 

Reyes is scheduled to stand trial on April 4, though he can reach a plea deal before then. The MLB veteran entered a not-guilty plea in November. 

Reyes was traded to the Rockies from the Toronto Blue Jays last July, and has two years and $44 million remaining on the six-year, $106 million contract he originally signed with the Miami Marlins in 2012.

In August, MLB announced a new domestic violence policy allowing commissioner Rob Manfred to determine the severity of any punishment in such cases.
