Red Sox’ David Ortiz hopes Yankees fans will cheer him at final game
Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz plans to step away from the game after this season, and the biggest honor he can imagine in his farewell tour would be to hear New York Yankees fans cheer his name, reports Kevin Kernan of the New York Post.
Ortiz, 40, has played for the Red Sox since 2003, helping orchestrate some of the biggest recent moments in the rivalry.
Despite spending his career trying to help his team beat the Yankees, Ortiz would like his time playing in New York on a high note.
“You know what I want most of all?’’ Big Papi told The Post on Tuesday at JetBlue Park. “I would love it if the fans at Yankee Stadium gave me a standing ovation.’’

Red Sox fans offered a similar gesture when Yankees closer Marino Rivera played his last game at Fenway, holding a pregame ceremony in his honor.
Entering the 20th season of his career, Ortiz has hit 503 home runs and been named an All-Star nine times.
