Lawrie, Coats homer off Bauer as White Sox tie Indians 5-5

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Trevor Bauer was not too concerned about giving up two homers in two innings.

''Throw hard, throw strikes, be healthy,'' the Cleveland Indians right-hander said after his first spring training outing, a 5-5 tie with the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

Brett Lawrie homered into the left-field bullpen in the first inning and Jason Coats connected in the second.

''I thought the ball came out of his hand pretty good,'' Indians manager Terry Francona said. ''He fell behind 2-0, 1-0 and threw fastballs.''

Cleveland closer Cody Allen pitched a scoreless third. He had 34 saves last year for Cleveland and was making his first appearance of spring training.

''I was really pleased,'' Francona said. ''He stayed in his delivery and didn't overthrow. I thought he looked really good.''

Adam LaRoche homered for Chicago in the sixth against Ross Detwiler. Hector Sanchez tied the game with a two-run single for the White Sox in the ninth.

Francisco Lindor and Roberto Perez drove in runs for Cleveland, and Eric Stamets hit a two-run double off Scott Carroll in the seventh.

STARTING

Chicago starter Jacob Turner allowed one hit in two scoreless innings. Turner, who missed last season because of shoulder inflammation, struck out two and walked one in a 37-pitch outing.

SALE ON THE SIDE

White Sox ace Chris Sale pitched three innings of batting practice. Chicago plans to hold the All-Star left-hander out of exhibition games until March 19.

''I don't see any reason why I wouldn't hit the ground running. Clearly facing your buddies is different and you don't have anybody in the field, but there's pros and cons to everything,'' Sale said.

Sale missed all of spring training a year ago because of a broken foot and didn't make his first start until April 12. He went 13-11 with a 3.41 ERA, leading the AL with 274 strikeouts, and was an All-Star for the fourth consecutive season.

Sale's first three spring training outings would have been against Cleveland, Oakland and Kansas City - two division rivals and Sale is likely to face the A's in Chicago's opener April 4 at Oakland. His second regular-season start would be at home against the Indians.

''You don't get the game-like feel but you get a little bit better work in, more specific stuff,'' Sale said. ''When the games come in it will be just like anything else.''
