Hamels gets 4 outs as Rangers knock off Giants 7-5

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) Cole Hamels pitched 1 1-3 innings in his spring debut, and the Texas Rangers beat a San Francisco Giants split-squad 7-5 on Saturday.

Hamels allowed one run on a homer by Mac Williamson. The left-hander struck out two and walked two.

''Hopefully I got the home runs out of my system,'' Hamels said. ''I have a lot to work on.''

Mitch Moreland hit a two-run double in Texas' four-run third inning. He finished with three RBIs.

Williamson added a two-run homer in the ninth.

''I've been working on getting into position to hit,'' Williamson said. ''It's starting to come together a little bit.''

Left-hander Ricky Romero started for the Giants, replacing Johnny Cueto, whose start was pushed to next week. Romero allowed a hit in 1 2-3 scoreless innings.

Giants relievers George Kontos and Javier Lopez each threw a scoreless inning.

STARTING TIME

Rangers: Hamels looks at the number of starts he gets during spring training and not necessarily the number of innings.

''If I get six games, I feel comfortable,'' Hamels said. ''That's six times warming up and preparing for a game. It doesn't matter if it's two innings or seven innings. It's a different intensity from the bullpen to the game. You're facing opposing hitters in there and it's time to develop a routine, develop a rhythm.''

Giants: Romero is hoping to show he can still pitch in the major leagues. The one-time All-Star last pitched in the bigs in 2013 and last won a game in September of 2012.

''It's been a while and I had a little bit of jitters, nerves going out there,'' Romero said. ''But I was able to find a good rhythm. There are a lot of things to be happy about.''

TRAINER'S ROOM

Rangers: RHP Jeremy Guthrie (lower-back stiffness) was scheduled to throw a bullpen session in Surprise. ... RHP Shawn Tolleson (lower-back spasms) has not pitched since Monday's intrasquad game and is day-to-day. ... RHP Yu Darvish (Tommy John surgery) will continue his bullpen sessions next week after successfully completing three of them to date.

Giants: OF Hunter Pence (right Achilles tendinitis) is expected to make his spring debut on Wednesday after taking batting practice and moving around on the field. ... OF Angel Pagan, making the transition to left field, is slated to play his first game on Tuesday. ''He's working hard out there and spending a lot of time in left field,'' Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
