Moore allows 1 hit over 2 innings for Rays in 2016 debut

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) Looking for his first fully healthy season since his rookie year in 2012, Matt Moore allowed one hit over two innings in his first spring training outing this year for the Tampa Bay Rays, a 3-2, 10-inning win over the Boston Red Sox on Monday.

Mookie Betts hit a leadoff home run for the Red Sox.

''I thought Matt was outstanding, really good. Nice to see,'' Rays manager Kevin Cash said. ''Very, very clean with everything. Threw a bunch of strikes, the ball Mookie Betts hit out from the side looked like a pretty good pitch. He's a pretty good hitter.''

Third baseman Pablo Sandoval's two errors in the fourth - one fielding, one throwing - led to two unearned runs.

''He got to the ball with his glove side in good fashion, but to redirect himself to make a strong enough throw to carry the distance across the infield,'' manager John Farrell said. ''And then the other ball I thought he was kind of caught in between on the hop and it results in the two errors.''

Boston tied the game in the bottom half when Xander Bogaerts scored from first on David Ortiz's single down the right-field line, Ortiz's first hit and first RBI of his final spring training.

STARTING TIME

Nearly two years removed from Tommy John surgery in April 2014, which limited him to 12 starts last season, Moore was pleased with his first outing.

''It feels great,'' he said. ''I think that's probably the biggest reason for the smile on my face most of the time when I come through the doors these days. Being away from the game for that long and struggling and getting back to where I want to be at the end of last season, the appreciation is a lot bigger and a lot more on my end of the game. I had a lot of fun out there.''

Henry Owens, a potential starter for Boston, gave up two hits in three scoreless innings with one walk with one strikeout and a hit batter in his second outing.

''With Henry it was an improvement over five days ago,'' Farrell said. ''I thought he was more readily able to make adjustments from pitch to pitch, as opposed to two or three pitches last time out. So, a positive step.''

TRAINER'S ROOM

Rays: Outfielder Steven Souza, Jr., who is sidelined with a left intercostal strain, took batting practice and could get into his first exhibition game on Friday or Saturday.

Red Sox: Catcher Christian Vazquez, who missed all of 2015 after Tommy John surgery in April, is scheduled to start Tuesday and play two innings in his first game action since he injured his elbow. ... Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, who injured his right patellar tendon on Feb. 27, went through his throwing program Monday and experienced cramping in his right calf. He is expected to continue throwing from flat ground. Farrell said Rodriguez has about 10 days to get into a game before he would be questionable for opening day.

SIM-TIME

Red Sox right-hander Rick Porcello is scheduled to pitch in a simulated game Tuesday.

MOVING DAY:

The Red Sox reassigned left-hander Danny Rosenbaum to minor league camp.
