Tanaka strong as Yankees beat winless Orioles 7-1

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Masahiro Tanaka allowed one hit over three shutout innings in his second spring training start, and the New York Yankees beat the winless Baltimore Orioles 7-1 Friday.

''I feel that I'm exactly where I need to be at,'' Tanaka said through a translator. ''If I compare it with my first year and my second year, I think I'm exactly where I was the previous two spring trainings.''

Coming off a procedure in October to remove a bone spur from his throwing elbow, Tanaka is lined up to start opening day on April 4 against Houston and AL Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel - a rematch of the AL wild-card game the Astros won 3-0 last October.

''He doesn't seem to have any problems,'' Yankees catcher Brian McCann said. ''He's throwing the ball good. He's moving around good. He's in total control of what he's doing.''

South Korean outfielder Hyun Soo Kim had a second-inning infield single in three at-bats for the Orioles, who dropped to 0-10-2 and have been outscored 87-39.

Kim, who is hitting .074 (2 for 27), reached on an infield single in the seventh for his first hit in Thursday's 4-4 tie with a Yankees split squad.

Baltimore had lineup that also included Nolan Reimold and Ryan Flaherty.

McCann had a two-run single in the first for the Yankees. Jacoby Ellsbury, 5 for 12 overall, also drove in two runs.

STARTING TIME

Orioles: RHP Mike Wright gave up five runs and five hits in 2 2-3 innings. He struck out six and walked two.

Yankees: Tanaka tossed two scoreless innings in a 6-5 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Orioles: Manager Buck Showalter isn't sure when he'll next start RHP Chris Tillman. Tillman, who missed his first scheduled start because of a strained right hip flexor, threw two innings in a ''B'' game against Pittsburgh Thursday. ... INF Ozzie Martinez, who collided with INF Garabez Rosa on Sunday, has been cleared to play on Saturday.

Yankees: LF Brett Gardner (bruised left wrist) could play for the first time Wednesday. He hasn't played since hurting the wrist in last year's AL wild-card game.

RENEWED

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said the contract of reliever Dellin Betances was renewed for 2016. The setup man has a major league salary for the $507,500 minimum, the same as last year and less than Luis Severino ($521,300), Bryan Mitchell ($516,650), Branden Pinder ($513,725), Nick Rubelow ($511,025), James Pazos ($508,625) and injured first baseman Greg Bird ($525,300), expected to miss the season following shoulder surgery.

GETTING READY FOR ALVAREZ: INF Pedro Alvarez, who signed with Baltimore on Thursday, will play his first game on either Sunday or Monday, Showalter said.

''He's wanting to go 100 miles an hour the first day, and (we) try to remind him he's not really behind,'' Showalter said. ''Just acclimating him to the team's defense, what the signals are for that and trying to catch up.''

The 29-year-old Alvarez has 131 homers in six major league seasons and was an All-Star in 2013. He hit .243 with 27 homers, 77 RBIs and 131 strikeouts last year with Pittsburgh.
