Nationals P Bronson Arroyo has torn rotator cuff

If Bronson Arroyo can not come back, David Ortiz will be the last remaining active member of the 2004 Boston Red Sox.

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo has a torn rotator cuff, he said during an appearance on MASN.

The injury, which Arroyo called a significant tear, could force the veteran pitcher to retire. He said that he will not have surgery to repair the injury, telling MASN that “it's either rehab or retire.”

Arroyo, 39, signed a minor league contract with Washington in hopes of making the major league rotation. He was scratched from his last start due to shoulder soreness. He underwent Tommy John surgery on his elbow in June 2014 and has not pitched in the majors since starting 14 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2014.

Arroyo pitched more than 199 innings each year from 2005 to 2013 with a career high of 240 2/3 innings pitched in 2006.

Joe Ross and Tanner Roark will contend for the final Nationals' rotation spots.

If Arroyo can not come back, David Ortiz will be the last remaining active member of the 2004 Boston Red Sox. Ortiz will retire after the 2016 season.
