VIERA, Fla. (AP) The game between the New York Mets and Washington Nationals scheduled for Saturday was rained out.

Matt Harvey had been scheduled to start for the Mets, but instead was held back because of the threat of inclement weather.

The Mets' opening day starter faced St. Louis minor leaguers and gave up six runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Harvey threw 71 pitches and struck out five.

''The biggest thing was just getting our pitch count up,'' he said. ''Obviously, I found out this morning pretty early that we were going to switch plans, but I think what we were trying to accomplish was just getting the pitch count, the workload, up a little bit. That was the biggest thing.''

STARTING TIME

Nationals: Joe Ross had been scheduled to pitch Saturday. There was no update on the pitching plans for Sunday.

NATIONALS MAKE CUTS

The Nationals reassigned INF Jason Martinson to minor league camp and granted OF Logan Schafer his unconditional release.

UP NEXT

Mets: Host Boston on Sunday.

Nationals: At a split squad of Detroit Tigers.
