SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) Matt Cain pitched into the third inning in his first start this spring, Buster Posey had three hits and drove in three runs and the San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 15-6 Friday night.

Hunter Pence, Brandon Crawford and Denard Span also homered for the Giants, who used their projected opening day lineup with Cain in place of Madison Bumgarner. Span drove in four runs.

Matt Kemp homered and John Jay had two hits and drove in a run for the Padres.

''Kemp hit a curveball that wasn't that bad,'' Posey said. ''He just put a good swing on it.''

Padres starter Brandon Maurer allowed 10 runs in 1 1-3 innings. Cain batted eighth and had two hits, both during a six-run second.

''In the `pen, everything was on point,'' Maurer said. ''I get into the game and try to do too much.''

STARTING TIME

Padres: Maurer would probably just as soon forget this outing, which came on the heels of a solid effort against the same team and on the same field.

''My changeup was horrible,'' Maurer said. ''I had no depth and just floated it in there. I was working on getting the changeup down but that's no excuse. I just have to go back to the `pen and get on top of it.''

Maurer allowed three home runs, all on changeups, a pitch he needs in his bag of tricks as he extends himself.

''Everything felt all right,'' he said. ''I threw some good pitches in there.''

Giants: Cain, returning after having a cyst removed from his right arm in February, was so excited about his spring debut that he had a hard time controlling the pre-game jitters.

''I got excited about being out there again,'' Cain said after throwing about 50 pitches. ''That's definitely something to build off. I was able to stretch it out and now just have to fine tune things.''

Posey was impressed with Cain's breaking pitch.

''From the bullpen to the game his breaking ball was really good,'' Posey said. ''I was happy about the crispness of the break and I hope he feels the same way.''

Giants manager Bruce Bochy thinks if Cain stays healthy, he has a chance at a big year.

''He'll give us a lot of quality starts,'' Bochy said. ''Hopefully he can get to 60-80 pitches by his final start.''

TRAINER'S ROOM

Padres: RHP Brandon Morrow (shoulder) could make his spring debut on Monday, though it appears unlikely he will be ready for opening day.

Giants: C Andrew Susac (tendinitis in right wrist) has not played since Monday. ... OF Gregor Blanco (back tightness) is improving and a return to the lineup is imminent.
