GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Mike Trout hit a three-run homer and C.J. Cron had a solo shot off Chris Sale in the sixth inning as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Chicago White Sox 6-5 Thursday.

Sale started with scoreless innings before the Angels tagged the lefty ace.

Angels reliever Tyler Skaggs, making his Cactus League debut, gave up one run in two innings. He hasn't pitched in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery in August 2014.

''It went better than my expectations, to be real with you,'' Skaggs said.

The left-hander indicated he's felt up-and-down this spring, but, ''Today I felt great. I feel very happy with myself that I put in the hard work, put in the time. I didn't cut any corners.''

''Tyler looked like he didn't skip a beat,'' manager Mike Scioscia said. ''He looked really sharp this afternoon. A good starting point for him.''

Jimmy Rollins hit his fourth spring homer and Brett Lawrie had a two-run drive for the White Sox.

The White Sox' Austin Jackson doubled in a run in the fifth.

The Angels broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh when the White Sox allowed Johnny Giavotella to get back to third base after he'd been caught in a rundown between third and home. Pinch hitter Rafael Ortega then came through with a two-run single.

STARTING TIME

Angels: Matt Shoemaker, a contender for one of the final rotation spots, gave up four runs in six innings. He walked one and struck out four.

''Overall, I'm very pleased,'' he said. ''I felt really good, executed pitches really well. You just got to get through those innings and put up zeroes.''

White Sox: Sale threw 88 pitches, walking one and striking out five. He said he is on track to start opening day April 4 at Oakland. ''All in all, it was a good day. The sixth inning got away a little bit. But that's what we're here for.to get that stamina and strength so when the season rolls around, we're prepared.''

TRAINER'S ROOM

Angels: Skaggs, if healthy, could be in the starting rotation. He threw three fastballs by Matt Davidson, a friend from his Arizona Diamondbacks days, after texting the White Sox infielder that his curve ball was ''feeling good.'' In addition, ''My change has really come along a lot. I'm really, really proud of it.''

White Sox: Right fielder Melky Cabrera appeared to be OK after he crashed into the fence while making a great catch on a drive by Cron.

Angels: Jered Weaver will pitch Friday at Mesa's Hohokam Stadium vs. Oakland's Rich Hill.

White Sox: Jose Quintana will start Friday in Peoria against Seattle's Felix Hernandez.
