Bauer goes 6 shutout innings in Indians' tie with Angels
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Trevor Bauer tossed six shutout innings and Jose Ramirez drove in a run as a Cleveland Indians split squad and the Los Angeles Angels played to a 1-1, nine-inning tie Tuesday.
Collin Cowgill doubled to reach base in six of his last seven games. He is 7 for 15 over that span after opening the spring by going 2 for 33.
Bauer gave up seven hits and struck out seven. He has allowed one run over his past 11 innings and has 12 strikeouts.
Angels starter Garrett Richards pitched a two-hitter over five innings, allowing a run, walking one and striking out four. Manager Mike Scioscia named Richards the opening day starter earlier in the day.
Rafael Ortega had three hits for the Angels and C.J. Cron and Geovany Soto each added two.
Indians: Bauer may not have had his best stuff, but manager Terry Francona was impressed with the way he pitched all the same.
''Coming out of the chute, he didn't have good life,'' Francona said. ''It was not his best fastball and he was still able to get them out. In our game, if you don't walk guys, don't let them steal and work ahead, you give yourself a pretty good chance at success.''
Angels: Richards already has his sights set on the Chicago Cubs and the opening day start on Monday.
''It's cool and definitely an honor,'' Richards said. ''It's been a lot of hard work to get to this point. I'm excited about it and I'm going to enjoy it.''
The righty used spring training to work on his change-up and while it is still a work in progress, he's happy with how it's developing.
''It's definitely a weapon to use and it will open a lot of doors,'' he said. ''It gives people a different look. It's going to be important to have it every fifth day.''
