D-backs option C Gosewisch to Triple-A Reno
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) The Arizona Diamondbacks have optioned catcher Tuffy Gosewisch to Triple-A Reno.
The move means Chris Herrmann, acquired in a trade with Minnesota in the offseason, moves into the backup job behind starting catcher Welington Castillo.
Gosewisch, a 32-year-old former Arizona State standout who has spent most of his career in the minors, was the Arizona starting catcher at the start of last season but went down with a season-ending knee injury on May 27. Known for his defensive skills, Gosewisch was hitting .132 this spring to Herrmann's .229. Herrmann bats left-handed and can play the outfield.
The move leaves 31 players in the team's major league camp. The roster must be down to 25 when Arizona opens its season at home against Colorado on Monday.
