WASHINGTON (AP) The Washington Nationals picked up the contract option for Mike Rizzo that keeps the president of baseball operations and general manager with the organization through the 2018 season.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The Nationals exercised the option before the June 15 deadline.
Rizzo joined the organization in 2007 and was named GM in 2010, the same year he selected Bryce Harper No. 1 overall in the first-year player draft. Washington won the NL East in 2012 and 2014.
''We are pleased with the job Mike has done over the past nine years,'' Nationals owner Theodore Lerner said in a statement released Saturday. ''He and the baseball operations team have worked tirelessly to help build this organization into one of Major League Baseball's elite clubs. We are fortunate to have him.''
Rizzo was promoted to president of baseball operations during the 2013 season.
''It feels good,'' Rizzo said after Saturday's doubleheader. ''We started from ground zero here and we built ourselves something that we believe in, that we think is special. I'm proud to be a part of it.''
