Angels righthander Garrett Richards won’t undergo Tommy John surgery, manager Mike Scioscia told reporters Monday.

Richards, who was expected to miss the remainder of the season to repair the UCL in his pitching elbow, will now be shut down at least six weeks to undergo stem cell therapy and then will be re-evaluated.

Richards has the best ERA of any starter on Anaheim’s staff, recording a 2.34 mark in six starts this season. He also has a 1.33 WHIP and has struck out 34 batters with 15 walks in 34 2/3 innings. In his MLB career, Richards has posted a 40–32 record with a 3.58 ERA.
