Home run pitches hurt Bettis in Rockies' 4-3 loss to Padres

SAN DIEGO (AP) Home run balls got Chad Bettis in trouble in the Colorado Rockies' 4-3 loss to the San Diego Padres.

Bettis allowed a solo homer to Wil Myers in the first inning and a two-run shot by Derek Norris in the second.

''That's what got me hurt,'' Bettis said. ''We had some guys make some great plays behind me tonight. It was just unfortunate those two balls get out of the yard and that's what ends up hurting us.''

Myers missed the cycle by a triple for the second time in four games.

Earlier in the day, the Padres sent right-hander James Shields and $29 million to the Chicago White Sox for two prospects, capping one of the more miserable weeks in team history. The deal came three days after Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler criticized the last-place team's recent performances as being ''embarrassing'' and ''pathetic,'' and called out Shields for his poor start Tuesday at Seattle.

Andrew Cashner (3-5) snapped a personal three-game losing streak. He held Colorado to three runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings, struck out three and walked three.

With two outs in the sixth, Cashner allowed a single to pinch-hitter Cristhian Adames and hit Charlie Blackmon with a pitch. Kevin Quackenbush came on and walked DJ LeMathieu to load the bases before getting Nolan Arenado to ground weakly to first.

Fernando Rodney got the final four outs for his 11th save in as many chances. His 21 1/3 innings without an earned run are the most among all relievers.

Myers homered to left-center off Bettis with one out in the first, his ninth. He singled in the third and doubled in the fifth. He also fell a triple shy of the cycle Wednesday against Seattle.

Norris homered to left with one out in the second, his sixth, with Brett Wallace aboard after he singled. Norris got his average above .200 for the first time this season.

''I've got to keep the ball in the yard, especially here at Petco,'' Bettis said.

Bettis (4-5) allowed four runs and 10 hits in five innings, struck out three and walked one.

Cashner allowed Mark Reynolds' homer leading off the fourth, his third, and Blackmon's two-run double with two outs in the second.

''Some pitches elevated,'' manager Walt Weiss said. ''He had to work hard to get through five. He battled like he always does. It didn't come easy for him tonight. He fought through it and didn't let it get away from him.''

Rockies: RHP Jon Gray (3-2, 5.76) is scheduled to start the finale of the three-game series, which will start at 6:10 p.m. Sunday to avoid conflicts with the Rock `n' Roll Marathon earlier in the day.

Padres: With Shields' spot in the rotation coming up Sunday night, manager Andy Green said a reliever will make a spot start Sunday night, possibly rookie Luis Perdomo.
