The Royals have placed outfielder Lorenzo Cain on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.
Cain told reporters Wednesday that he hopes to return after the All-Star break. He injured his left hamstring running out a ground ball during Tuesday’s game.
His injury is the latest in a string of bad health for the Royals, who have Mike Moustakas, Kris Medlen, Mike Minor, Jason Vargas and Tim Collins all on the disabled list. Cain is hitting .290 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs this season, manning centerfield.
The Royals are playing in St. Louis on Wednesday and are starting Kendrys Morales, typically a first baseman or designated hitter, in rightfield. He last played the position in 2008.
The team recalled outfielder Brett Eibner as a corresponding move. The defending champion Royals are 40–36 entering Wednesday and in contention for a wild card spot.
