Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg was pulled after 6 2/3 no-hit innings against the Reds on Sunday, leaving Washington’s bullpen to finish off a potential no-hitter.
In his return from the disabled list, Strasburg held Cincinnati hitless through six innings, walking four and striking out five. He was replaced by Blake Treinen after throwing 109 pitches.
Entering the top of the eighth, with the Nationals ahead 11–0, Matt Belisle came on in relief of Treinen to continue the team’s combined no-hit effort. He allowed a lead-off single to Ramon Cabrera through the left side on an 89-mph fastball away, ending the no-hitter.
Washington’s offensive charge was led by homers from Wilson Ramos, Danny Espinosa and Bryce Harper.
Strasburg entered the game 10–0 on the season, with a 2.74 ERA and 122 strikeouts. He was a late decision and game-time activation for Washington, which placed starter Joe Ross on the disabled list on Sunday.
The Nationals went on to win the game 12–1, taking their third victory of the four-game series with the Reds.
