Dodgers send teenage pitcher Julio Urias down to Triple-A

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Dodgers have sent teenage pitcher Julio Urias to Triple-A after eight starts in an effort to control his innings.

The left-hander was 1-2 with a 4.95 ERA after making his big league debut on May 27 at the New York Mets. The team has the 19-year-old from Mexico on an unspecified innings limit this season. He was scheduled to be sent down earlier, but several injuries to the rotation forced an extended stay.

Urias gave up six hits and five earned runs in 3 1/3 innings of the Dodgers' 7-5 win over the Orioles on Monday. He has pitched 77 1/3 innings for the Dodgers and Triple-A Oklahoma City.

His departure opens up a spot in the rotation for Hyun-Jin Ryu, who is set to start Thursday for the first time since 2014 playoffs after recovering from shoulder injuries.

In a corresponding move on Tuesday, the Dodgers recalled left-hander Luis Avilan from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Avilan has appeared in four games in two previous stints with the Dodgers this season, allowing three runs in 1.0 inning.
