The Marlins nearly saw a ticket promo backfire when rightfielder Giancarlo Stanton clubbed 61 home runs at Monday night’s Home Run Derby.

The team’s marketing department sent out an email earlier in the day offering fans 1% off future tickets for each home run hit by Stanton in the contest. So, 10 home runs would equal 10% off at any future home game, 25 would equal 25% off, and 61 would, in theory, equal 61% off, knocking $218 seats down to $164.

Luckily for the Marlins, MLB Advanced Media, which is in charge of team sites, does not allow a conditional promotion such as this one to discount tickets more than 25%, team president David Samson told ESPN’s Darren Rovell.

That doesn’t mean the Marlins’ marketing department won’t still capitalize on the fact that Stanton hit 61 homers.

“What Giancarlo did was so cool that we are working on an additional offer,” Samson told Rovell. “We’re thinking about picking a game and offering 61% off.”

And, sure enough, Miami posted a “Flash Offer” early on Tuesday for 61% off tickets to their game against the Cardinals on Friday, July 29. Fans can’t have their pick of what game to attend for 61% off, but they can grab tickets to see the Marlins play a good team on a Friday night. Or, they can buy tickets to another game at a 25% discount.
