Padres trade Drew Pomeranz to Red Sox for top prospect Espinoza

The Red Sox have traded for Padres lefthander Drew Pomeranz, sending pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza to San Diego in exchange, the teams announced.
Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune first reported the deal. Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald first reported Espinoza was part of the trade.
The 27-year-old Pomeranz is 8–7 with a 2.47 ERA this season and was selected to his first All-Star team. Espinoza, 18, has a 4.38 ERA and 5–8 record in Single A ball this season, and was rated as Boston’s No. 2 prospect and top pitching prospect by Baseball Prospectus.
Pomeranz is holding opponents to a .184 batting average against, tops in the National league, and averages 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings. He will be a free agent at the end of the season. Boston has been in need of another rotation piece, with David Price, Rick Porcello and Steven Wright their only consistent starters this season.
The Red Sox are 49–38 coming out of the All-Star break, second in the AL East. The Padres are 38–51 and have fallen out of the playoff pack in the National League.
