Myers hits 20th homer as Padres beat Bumgarner, Giants 4-1

SAN DIEGO (AP) The San Diego Padres opened the second half by beating their nemesis, the San Francisco Giants, who happen to have baseball's best record.

All-Star slugger Wil Myers hit his 20th home run and Adam Rosales also connected off Madison Bumgarner, powering the Padres to a 4-1 victory Friday night.

The Padres snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Giants, their longest against San Francisco.

''They owned us in the first half,'' manager Andy Green said. ''There's no doubt about that. They beat us handily, consistently. It's a lot better being on this side of things.''

Bumgarner (11-4), also an All-Star, didn't appear Tuesday in the Midsummer Classic at Petco Park because he pitched on Sunday, throwing a one-hitter and striking out 14 in a 4-0 victory against Arizona.

Rosales homered off the side of the Western Metal Supply Co. brick warehouse in the left-field corner leading off the fourth, his sixth.

Myers, eliminated in the first round of the All-Star Home Run Derby on Monday night, homered to right-center in the fifth.

''I saw him well tonight,'' Myers said. ''Obviously, he's had some success off me. I saw some good pitches tonight. I felt like he left some mistakes over the plate. I was just able to put good swings on them.''

Andrew Cashner (4-7) won for the first time in four starts by holding the Giants to one run and four hits in six innings, striking out nine and walking none.

''It was vintage Cashner,'' Green said. ''It was really good. I don't remember him ever ripping off sliders like that. That's as hard as I've ever seen him throw a slider. ... It was a top-of-the-rotation type start today.''

Bumgarner ''just wasn't quite as sharp,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''We've gotten pretty spoiled with him. Six innings, four runs, that's an off night for him, obviously. A couple of balls left the ballpark. He just wasn't quite as sharp and they took advantage of it. Still, he keeps you in the game. We just couldn't do anything offensively.''

Brandon Maurer worked the ninth for his second save.

Brandon Belt was ejected for arguing with umpire Mike Estabrook after striking out in the ninth, and Bochy also was tossed.

Bumgarner allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings. He struck out nine and walked one.

Yangervis Solarte hit an RBI double in the first and Matt Kemp had an RBI single in the third for San Diego.

Conor Gillaspie singled home the Giants' run in the second.

FUNNY MOMENT

Solarte, the Padres' third baseman, tumbled into the stands to catch a foul pop in the ninth inning. When he emerged, the ball was covered in what appeared to be nacho cheese.

''It was a great catch,'' Green said. ''He might've gotten a hot dog and some mustard on it over there. I don't know what he went into over there. I don't think you want to go into the ground in the first row too often. You get a lot of peanut shells and beer and everything else.''

TRAINER'S ROOM

Giants: OF Hunter Pence, on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring, began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento. Bochy said he'd like Pence to get at least 30 at-bats before rejoining the active roster.

Padres: RHP Tyson Ross, who hasn't pitched since opening day due to inflammation in his right shoulder, will be set back two more weeks after spraining an ankle last week.

Giants: RHP Jeff Samardzija (9-5, 3.91 ERA), who won his final start before the All-Star break, is scheduled to start the middle game of the series Saturday night.

Padres: Rookie RHP Luis Perdomo (3-4, 7.48) will try to bounce back from a loss in his last start before the break.
