St. Louis Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday left Thursday’s game against the San Diego Padres after being hit in the face by a pitch from Andrew Cashner.

Holliday could be seen holding his nose as he walked away from the batters box and went down to the ground.

After being examined by team doctors, the Cardinals announced that he had suffered a facial abrasion, but did not sustain a fracture.

Holliday did not return to the game and his status is day-to-day.

The 36-year-old attempted to stay in the game after talking to manager Mike Matheny, but was eventually replaced by pinch-runner Mike Leake.
