Luis Severino to move back into Yankees' rotation

NEW YORK (AP) Luis Severino is rejoining the New York Yankees' rotation.

Dropped in May after starting 0-6, Severino was banished to the minor leagues for two months. He now will take the turn of departed Ivan Nova and start Tuesday at Boston.

Chad Green moved into Nova's slot and pitched poorly Wednesday night against the New York Mets, allowing eight hits in 3 2/3 innings and 94 pitches. He gave up three runs and was helped by double-play grounders in each of the first three innings.

Severino followed and allowed only one hit and an unearned run in 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and a walk, getting the win in the Yankees' 9-5 victory. That was the only run and hit off him in 8 1/3 innings over three relief appearances since his recall.

Severino said he had worked with pitching coach Larry Rothschild to prevent tipping off hitters to his fastball, which was occurring when Severino rocked his head back. Severino went 5-3 with a 2.89 ERA as a rookie in the final two months of last season, but the 22-year-old right-hander went 0-6 with a 7.46 ERA in seven starts when he was sent down.

''I think you just continue to remind him what made him successful, and I think last night, it was the command of his fastball and the depth of his breaking ball,'' manager Joe Girardi said before Thursday night's game against the Mets.

Green was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre on Thursday, and right-hander Johnny Barbato was recalled from the RailRiders. Girardi said he envisioned Green pitching again for the Yankees this season.
