Luis Severino brought back by Yankees as rosters expand

NEW YORK (AP) Luis Severino rejoined the New York Yankees ahead of Friday night's game against Baltimore after three minor league appearances.

The 22-year-old right-hander was 5-3 with a 2.89 ERA as a rookie in the final two months of last season but has struggled this year and was sent to the minors three times. He is 1-8 with a 7.19 ERA for the Yankees in 2016 and is their first pitcher to lose six straight starts since Kevin Brown in 2004-05.

New York optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Aug. 14 and told him to work on his changeup. He made two starts and one relief appearance for the RailRiders, allowing four runs each in starts against Pawtucket and Syracuse, then pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief Tuesday at Buffalo.

A day after active rosters expanded to 40, New York also recalled infielder Rob Refsnyder from Scranton along with right-hander Nick Goody, and right-hander Kirby Yates was recalled from rookie level Pulaski.

Outfielder Eric Young Jr., acquired from Milwaukee on Wednesday for $20,000, was selected from the RailRiders along with right-hander Jonathan Holder.

To clear a spot in the 40-man roster, right-hander Nick Rumbelow was activated from the seven-day minor league disabled list, recalled from Scranton and placed him on the 60-day big league disabled list. Rumbelow tore a ligament in his pitching elbow while pitching for Scranton in his season debut on April 10, an injury that required Tommy John surgery.
