Manager Dusty Baker has yet to announce an Opening Day starter.

What’s the hesitation?

Framber Valdez is the clear-cut choice for the Houston Astros.

Valdez was the Opening Day starter last season and his stock is even higher heading into the 2023 regular season.

“It would mean a lot to me,” Valdez told reporters. “I would be very satisfied with it and feel very proud of all the hard work I’ve done.”

Valdez earned the victory in the All-Star Game and placed fifth in voting for the American League Cy Young Award last season.

Valdez was stellar, going 17-6 with a 2.82 ERA in 31 starts in the regular season, including a record 25 straight quality starts.

He continued to excel with a 3-0 mark and a 1.44 ERA in four postseason starts, including 2-0 in the World Series (two runs allowed in 12 1/3 innings).

What’s the delay in naming Valdez for Opening Day?

Regardless, the young standout is maintaining an incredible level of professionalism.

“Not that I expect it, but if I am, I’m just ready to get the job done,” Valdez said. “Do the same thing I did last year or be better than last year, and hopefully get positive results.”

Through four Grapefruit League starts, Valdez has a 1.98 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings.

Oh, he’s ready.

“He’s come a long ways in a short period of time,” Baker said. “He’s had three quality years here. He’s been great, and he’s really matured as a player and a person.”

No need to wait, Dusty. Just do it.

Valdez is your Opening Day starter.
