Blue Jays Prospect Injury Update

Top Blue Jays prospects Gabriel Moreno and Nate Pearson are both dealing with injuries, GM Ross Atkins said

Two of Toronto's top prospects find themselves battling frustrating injuries.

Blue Jays General Manager Ross Atkins met with the media Wednesday and provided updates on Nate Pearson and Gabriel Moreno.

Moreno, a catcher for Double-A New Hampshire and Toronto's No. 6 prospect, was struck by a pitch earlier this week and suffered a "minor fracture" in his thumb, per Atkins. Moreno had been hitting over .370 with eight home runs and moving up top prospect lists, but will now miss weeks and could need a procedure, per Atkins.

Moreno recently joined MLB.com and Baseball America's Top 100 Prospects lists, after leading a dynamic New Hampshire offense with a .441 OBP and .651 SLG. Initially a shortstop, the Fisher Cats recently played Moreno back in the infield, expanding his defensive versatility beyond catcher.

Blue Jays top pitching prospect, Pearson, continues to seek medical opinions on his injured groin, Atkins said. Blue Jays President Mark Shapiro recently said Pearson was going for his fifth medical opinion on the injury.

"We're starting to feel like there could be something underlying," Atkins said.

Though there have been no medical findings on an underlying condition or injury, Atkins said, Pearsons most recent injury was the second he has suffered this season on his groin. Pearsons has started just six games this season in Triple-A and the Majors. In his lone MLB start, Pearson lasted 2.1 innings, walked five, and allowed three earned runs against the Astros.
