Alex Anthopoulos hasn't lost a trade in six years

The president of baseball operations for the Atlanta Braves is one of the best in the business

The Atlanta Braves recently gave President of Baseball Operations Alex Anthopoulos a contract extension of unprecedented length, locking him up through the 2031 season. (He even got his own "here to stay" tweet, too.)

And when you look at the roster Anthopoulos has built, can you blame the organization for doing it? Atlanta has long term control and financial certainty at virtually every single position on the diamond, with the next starter to reach free agency being shortstop Orlando Arcia in 2027 and the only unknown future salary of any significance being whatever offseason acquisition Jarred Kelenic makes once he reaches arbitration in 2025.

And this offseason, Anthopoulos has demonstrated his trading prowess, using various "salary dump" deals from other teams to acquire multiple players with long term control, including Kelenic and reliever Ray Kerr, as well as acquiring veteran starter Chris Sale for only one player, infielder Vaughn Grissom.

But there's another thing that we're not talking about Alex Anthopoulos, one where he deserves more credit than he seemingly gets: The man doesn't lose a trade.

By our count, the last time Atlanta could be considered to have "lost" a trade under Anthopoulos is November of 2017.

11/30/17 - Atlanta Braves traded RHP Jim Johnson (and international bonus slot money) to Los Angeles Angels for LHP Justin Kelly.

Johnson, 34 at the time, pitched his final season for the Angels in 2018 on a $5M salary and then retired following the year. Going 5-3 with a 3.84 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 63.1 innings, it wasn't exactly a stellar success and probably underwhelming for the salary.

But the only reason it could be considered a loss is what happened to Kelly. The prospect, a 33rd pick by the Angels in 2016 out of UC-Santa Barbara, didn't make it out of AA with the Braves, following up 2018's 3.44 ERA with a 4.26 in only 19 games in 2018 and was released in 2019. He hasn't played in affiliated ball since.

Here's a list of every trade Alex Anthopoulos has made since that date, courtesy of MLB.com's transaction tracker. Tell us which ones of these you'd like to have back:

(Yes, this is long, but you literally asked for it)

12/16/17 - Atlanta Braves traded LF Matt Kemp to Los Angeles Dodgers for Adrian Gonzalez, LHP Scott Kazmir, RHP Brandon McCarthy, LF Charlie Culberson and cash.

WIN: Brandon McCarthy made 15 starts for Atlanta and it brought us Charlie Clutch. Easy call

12/20/17 Houston Astros traded LF Preston Tucker to Atlanta Braves for Player To Be Named Later or Cash Considerations.

WIN: Tucker played in 62 games (25 starts) to open 2018, batting .256/.307/.444. And any trade for a major league contributor where the return is just cash considerations is a win in my book.

01/17/18 Pittsburgh Pirates traded RHP Shane Carle to Atlanta Braves.

WIN: Can't lose a trade for cash considerations. Plus, Carle went 4-1 with a 2.86 ERA in 63.0 innings in 2018.

03/31/18 Los Angeles Angels traded C Carlos Perez to Atlanta Braves for 3B Ryan Schimpf.

DRAW: Perez's acquisition came the day after Tyler Flowers hit the IL, and he stayed here for a total of eight games, going 3-21, until Flowers was ready to return in late April. Schimpf, in turn, went 1-5 as mostly a defensive replacement for the Angels before being released and never playing again in the majors. You could argue this was a win, if you wanted, but I'll acquiesce to a draw.

04/03/18 Atlanta Braves traded RHP Akeel Morris to Los Angeles Angels for Player To Be Named Later or Cash Considerations

WIN: Morris put up a 5.79 ERA in 14 innings with LA before being released, and wasn't back in affiliated ball until signing a minor-league deal with the Giants in the summer of 2021. He went 7-3 with a 5.57 ERA in their minor leagues before being released that winter.

05/05/18 Atlanta Braves traded C Tanner Murphy to San Francisco Giants.

WIN: Again, can't lose a cash deal. Murphy's surprisingly still playing - he put up a .187/.289/.273 slashline for Binghamton, the Mets AA affiliate last season.

06/21/18 Kansas City Royals traded CF Brandon Downes to Atlanta Braves.

DRAW: Hard to lose a cash trade, but you didn't win this one, either. Downes batted .205 in his 37 AA games in 2018 and then was out of affiliated ball forever.

07/26/18 Tampa Bay Rays traded LHP Jonny Venters to Atlanta Braves for Future Considerations.

WIN: Venters is the best - go check out our interviews over on the Braves Today YouTube page - PART 1 and PART 2

07/31/18 Cincinnati Reds traded Adam Duvall to Atlanta Braves for RHP Lucas Sims, RHP Matt Wisler and Preston Tucker.

WIN: Adam Duvall had contractual control and ended up being a very useful piece for Atlanta (as well as someone we'd go trade for again)

07/31/18 Baltimore Orioles traded RHP Kevin Gausman and RHP Darren O'Day to Atlanta Braves for RHP Evan Phillips, 3B Jean Carlos Encarnacion, C Brett Cumberland, LHP Bruce Zimmermann and Future Considerations.

WIN: While Gausman is the one that got away, we didn't know in 2018 that he'd become the player he is now. Easily a win.

08/30/18 Atlanta Braves traded C Chris Stewart to Arizona Diamondbacks for cash.

WIN: Stewart went only 0-1 in three games for Arizona down the stretch, filling in as a late-game replacement and occasional pinch-hitter, and after signing a minor league deal in the spring of 2019, was out of baseball by June.

09/02/18 Cincinnati Reds traded LF Preston Tucker to Atlanta Braves for cash.

WIN: Hello, old friend. While he hasn't made it back to the majors again, Tucker's still banging around baseball, having gone .293/.433/.565 with San Diego's AAA affiliate the El Paso Chihuahuas last season.

09/02/18 Atlanta Braves traded LHP Tyler Watson to Chicago White Sox.

DRAW: Watson pitched to a 0-1 record and 9.88 ERA in 13.2 minor league relief innings for the Single-A Kannapolis Cannon Ballers at the age of 26 and was released at the end of the 2019 season.

11/01/18 San Diego Padres traded C Raffy Lopez to Atlanta Braves for cash.

WIN: Lopez was an emergency 3rd catcher, held in Gwinnett for the season. He batted .319/.418/.532 in his first 14 games before spending most of the season on the injured list and becoming a free agent after the season.

11/28/18 Atlanta Braves traded LHP Adam McCreery to Los Angeles Dodgers for cash.

11/28/18 Atlanta Braves traded LHP Ricardo Sanchez to Seattle Mariners for cash.

WIN: Grouping these together. Both players were moved for 40-man roster space, with the team having DFA'd them earlier in the week to make room for Josh Donaldson and Brian McCann. Getting something -anything - for a player you had DFA'd is a win.

04/28/19 Oakland Athletics traded LHP Jerry Blevins to Atlanta Braves for cash.

WIN: Can't lose a cash trade, especially when that trade acquisition appears in 45 games for you with an ERA under 4.00, picking up a win and converting his only save opportunity of the season.

05/20/19 Atlanta Braves traded LHP Jesse Biddle and RHP Arodys Vizcaino to Seattle Mariners for RHP Anthony Swarzak and cash.

WIN: Swarzak pitched in 44 games for Atlanta after the trade, with an ERA just over 4.30 but also converting his only save opportunity. Biddle was waived after putting up a 9.82 ERA in 11 innings and Vizcaino didn't pitch in the majors again until 2022, giving the Royals a 6.35 ERA in 5.2 innings with more runs allowed (4) than strikeouts (3).

07/25/19 Atlanta Braves traded RHP Shane Carle to Texas Rangers for cash.

WIN: Anything of value for a guy you DFA'd the day before is a win.

07/30/19 Texas Rangers traded RHP Chris Martin to Atlanta Braves for LHP Kolby Allard.

WIN: Martin went on to pitch in 20 games for Atlanta down the stretch, adding 55 more across the next two seasons. Allard only once had an ERA under 5.00 for the Rangers, with who he played for through the 2022 season.

07/31/19 Arizona Diamondbacks traded C John Ryan Murphy to Atlanta Braves for cash.

WIN: Acquired a backup catcher to stash in Gwinnett for cash. Hard to call that a loss.

07/31/19 San Francisco Giants traded RHP Mark Melancon to Atlanta Braves for RHP Dan Winkler and RHP Tristan Beck.

WIN: The first trade where you wonder if having the prospect (Beck) back would be preferable. Melancon was the closer down the stretch in 2019 and reprised that role in 2020 (combined 22 for 24 in save opportunities) before leaving in free agency following the 2020 season. Beck, a 4th round pick by Atlanta in 2018 out of Stanford, was a long relief arm for the Giants last season, putting up a 3-3 record and 3.92 ERA while making 3 starts and picking up two saves.

07/31/19 Detroit Tigers traded RHP Shane Greene to Atlanta Braves for LHP Joey Wentz and LF Travis Demeritte.

WIN: Greene picked up ten holds and a save down the stretch for the Braves, and then put up a 2.60 ERA with nine holds in 2020 before being released out of Atlanta's minor league system in late 2021. He's bounced around the league since then, spending time with the Dodgers, Yankees, and Cubs. Wentz hd a promising debut in 2022, with a 3.03 ERA in seven starts, but put up a 6.90 ERA in 2023 and was moved to the bullpen. Atlanta got Demeritte back off of waivers in 2021 and he played in 26 games in 2022, batting .216 before being sent back down and electing free agency after the season.

08/31/19 Detroit Tigers traded LHP Caleb Thielbar to Atlanta Braves.

DRAW: Thielbar pitched two innings in Atlanta's minor league system and was released after the season. Signing with the Minnesota Twins as a free agent, Thielbar eventually returned to the majors in 2020 and is still a major league reliever with Minnesota.

09/08/19 Atlanta Braves traded OF Ryan LaMarre to Minnesota Twins for cash.

WIN: After a productive year for Gwinnett with no major league call-up, Atlanta flipped LaMarre to the Twins for cash. He's since been part of five different organizations, getting 14 MLB games with the Twins down the stretch in 2019 (.217 batting average) and 9 with the New York Yankees in 2021 (.190 batting average). He was released last summer and is still a free agent.

07/24/20 Cincinnati Reds traded RF Scott Schebler to Atlanta Braves for cash.

DRAW: Schebler reported to Atlanta's alternate site, but went on the IL shortly after reporting. He ultimately got one at-bat with the big league club before the season ended, and after electing free agency, batted .147 in 14 major-league games with the Angels in 2021.

08/12/20 Atlanta Braves traded 1B Yonder Alonso to San Diego Padres for cash.

WIN: Signed to a minor-league deal in February of 2020, Alonso never played for Atlanta because of the cancellation of the minor league season and was ultimately flipped for cash to the Padres. They released him after the 2020 season, ending his major league career.

08/30/20 Baltimore Orioles traded LHP Tommy Milone to Atlanta Braves for Player To Be Named Later and Player To Be Named Later. AJ Graffanino and Greg Cullen traded to Orioles as PTBNL, 11/5/2020

DRAW: Milone went on the injured list just days after being acquired by Atlanta, and was ultimately released after the season. He's spent time since with the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners, where he just elected free agency after being DFA'd to Seattle's AAA affiliate in July of 2023.

04/06/21 Atlanta Braves traded P Patrick Weigel and P Chad Sobotka to Milwaukee Brewers for SS Orlando Arcia.

WIN: Arcia, now the starting shortstop, was an All-Star in 2023.

04/09/21 Pittsburgh Pirates traded P Edgar Santana to Atlanta Braves for cash.

WIN: "Cash Considerations" can buy you 41 relief appearances with a 3.59 ERA if you play your cards right.

05/19/21 Tampa Bay Rays traded C Kevan Smith to Atlanta Braves for cash.

WIN: Cash can also buy you a backup catcher to stash in AAA if you play your cards right.

05/22/21 Arizona Diamondbacks traded RHP Yoan Lopez to Atlanta Braves for CF Deivi Estrada.

DRAW: Lopez put up a 3.03 ERA in 32 relief appearances and is now a member of the Mets organization. Estrada is out of baseball after being released in August after putting up a 1.59 ERA in his 2nd year of rookie ball action. You could argue this is a win for Atlanta, but we're fine calling it a wash.

06/04/21 Toronto Blue Jays traded RHP Ty Tice to Atlanta Braves for cash.

DRAW: Tyce, who pitched exactly one scoreless inning in relief for Atlanta with one hit and one walk, was eventually claimed off waivers by the Diamondbacks, released and re-signed to a minor league deal by Atlanta, and then signed to a minor-league deal by the Washington Nationals this winter.

07/11/21 Atlanta Braves traded RF Tyler Neslony to Chicago White Sox.

DRAW: The 29 year-old Neslony batted .239 between Chicago's AA and AAA affiliates last season

07/15/21 Chicago Cubs traded CF Joc Pederson to Atlanta Braves for 1B Bryce Ball.

07/16/21 Arizona Diamondbacks traded C Stephen Vogt to Arizona Diamondbacks for 1B Mason Berne.

07/30/21 Kansas City Royals traded RF Jorge Soler to Atlanta Braves for RHP Kasey Kalich.

07/30/21 Miami Marlins traded LF Adam Duvall to Atlanta Braves for C Alex Jackson.

07/30/21 Pittsburgh Pirates traded RHP Richard Rodriguez to Atlanta Braves for RHP Bryse Wilson and RHP Ricky DeVito.

07/30/21 Cleveland Indians traded LF Eddie Rosario and cash to Atlanta Braves for 3B Pablo Sandoval.

WIN, the biggest of them all: Atlanta won a World Series using guys that were practically being given away. Don't even need to explain this one, do I?

11/22/21 San Francisco Giants traded RHP Jay Jackson to Atlanta Braves for Player To Be Named Later or Cash Considerations.

12/08/21 Atlanta Braves traded RHP Tanner Andrews to San Francisco Giants.

DRAW: Jackson's now an effective reliever, albeit it with the Toronto Blue Jays, while Andrews is out of baseball. As Jackson only threw 1.1 innings for Atlanta, we'll call it a draw instead of a win.

03/14/22 Oakland Athletics traded 1B Matt Olson to Atlanta Braves for CF Cristian Pache, C Shea Langeliers, RHP Ryan Cusick and RHP Joey Estes.

WIN: Another "we don't have to explain this one to you" trade.

04/21/22 Atlanta Braves traded LHP Sean Newcomb to Chicago Cubs for RHP Jesse Chavez and cash.

WIN: Not the last time you'll see Uncle Jesse on this list.

06/07/22 Arizona Diamondbacks traded RHP Jacob Webb to Atlanta Braves.

WIN: Hello old friend, welcome back.

06/06/22 Tampa Bay Rays traded C Dawson Dimon to Atlanta Braves.

WIN: Dimon is still in the organization, having spent last year at Single-A Augusta.

07/01/22 Boston Red Sox traded RHP Silvino Bracho to Atlanta Braves for cash.

DRAW: Bracho bounced between the final spot in the bullpen and Gwinnett, and is now with the Cincinnati Reds.

07/04/22 Atlanta Braves traded RHP Touki Toussaint to Los Angeles Angels.

WIN: DFA'd just days earlier, Atlanta got something of value for their former top prospect, who is now on his third organization since the trade.

07/05/22 Toronto Blue Jays traded 2B Leonel Callez to Atlanta Braves.

DRAW: A low cost lottery ticket to see if the former IFA could develop into something, Callez was released at the end of July last year.

07/10/22 San Diego Padres traded 2B Robinson Cano to Atlanta Braves for cash

DRAW: The cost was only cash, but I refuse to call this a 'win"

07/11/22 Atlanta Braves traded OF Drew Waters, RHP Andrew Hoffmann and 3B CJ Alexander to Kansas City Royals for Draft Pick. CBA Pick # 35.

WIN: That draft pick went on to be JR Ritchie, one of the organization's top pitching prospects.

08/01/22 Washington Nationals traded SS Ehire Adrianza to Atlanta Braves for 2B Trey Harris.

WIN: Adrianza served as valuable utility and AAA depth for the Braves

08/02/22 Los Angeles Angels traded RHP Raisel Iglesias to Atlanta Braves for RHP Jesse Chavez and LHP Tucker Davidson.

WIN: Iglesias not only has served as the Braves closer since the 2023 season began, Atlanta also got Chavez back when they claimed him off of waivers less than a month later.

08/02/22 Atlanta Braves traded LHP Will Smith to Houston Astros for RHP Jake Odorizzi.

DRAW: Everyone is going to want to call this one a loss because Odorizzi only made ten starts for Atlanta down the stretch, while Smith went on to win the World Series with the Astros. One problem: Smith didn't pitch in the postseason. Neither pitcher made the initial postseason roster, and Smith was added for the World Series but didn't appear in a game. This wasn't a loss by Atlanta.

08/02/22 Detroit Tigers traded LF Robbie Grossman to Atlanta Braves for LHP Kris Anglin.

WIN: Grossman played in 46 games down the stretch, while Anglin put up a 5.15 ERA in twenty minor league games across both teams in 2022 and was released after 2023 spring training.

08/16/22 Milwaukee Brewers traded 1B Tyler White to Atlanta Braves for cash.

DRAW: White became a minor league free agent after the 2022 season and spent time with the Twins and Mets before being released in July of 2023.

11/06/22 Colorado Rockies traded RF Sam Hilliard and to Atlanta Braves for RHP Dylan Spain.

WIN: Hilliard got major league playtime while Michael Harris II was out with injury. After being put on waivers at the end of the season, he was claimed by the Baltimore Orioles. Spain spent most of 2023 injured, but pitched to a 5.85 ERA in relief for the AA Hartford Yard Goats around his injured or development list stints.

11/09/22 Texas Rangers traded LHP Kolby Allard to Atlanta Braves for RHP Jake Odorizzi and cash.

WIN: Odorizzi spent the entire 2023 season on the injured list with a right rotator cuff strain before heading to free agency after the season. Allard, just by virtue of getting on the field with the Braves (12.1 innings), gives Atlanta the win here.

11/15/22 Texas Rangers traded RHP Dennis Santana to Atlanta Braves for cash.

DRAW: Santana was waived in February and after being claimed by the Mets, spent the entire season alternating between the back of the bullpen and AAA Syracuse.

2/07/22 Detroit Tigers traded RHP Joe Jiménez and cash to Atlanta Braves for 3B Justyn-Henry Malloy and LHP Jake Higginbotham.

WIN: Another close call for Atlanta, but Jiménez has put up an ERA just over 3.00 with Atlanta and was re-signed, while Henry-Malloy is a promising prospect but has yet to debut for the Tigers. It's a win, as of now

12/12/22 Atlanta Braves traded RHP Freddy Tarnok, C Manny Piña, RHP Royber Salinas, 2B Esteury Ruiz and LHP Kyle Muller to Oakland Athletics for C Sean Murphy.

WIN: The infamous three way trade with the Braves, Athletics, and Brewers. It's a win.

(Not sure why the team's transaction wire doesn't show what went to the Brewers - namely catcher William Contreras - but it's still a win, in my book.)

12/16/22 Boston Red Sox traded SS Hoy Park to Atlanta Braves for Player To Be Named Later.

DRAW: Veteran depth at shortstop to stash in AA during the Dansby Swanson free agency. Not a win, but not a loss.

12/23/22 Baltimore Orioles traded 1B Lewin Díaz to Atlanta Braves.

WIN: More veteran depth to stash in AAA.

12/28/22 New York Yankees traded LHP Lucas Luetge to Atlanta Braves for SS Caleb Durbin and RHP Indigo Diaz.

DRAW: Had high hopes for Luetge, but it just didn't pan out. He went 1-0 with a 7.24 ERA in 13.2 relief appearances before hitting the IL with bicep inflammation and then spending the rest of the season in Gwinnett. But Diaz pitched to a 5.68 ERA in High-A Hudson Valley while Durbin had a good season statistically but also two different late season stints on the injured list and isn't among New York's Top 30 prospects, per MLB Pipeline.

01/03/23 Texas Rangers traded SS Eli White to Atlanta Braves for cash.

WIN: White went 1-14 in six games for Atlanta in 2023 as a depth outfielder. Hard to lose a cash trade when the piece you got actually played in the majors.

03/23/23 Philadelphia Phillies traded RHP Jonathan Hughes to Atlanta Braves.

WIN: A minor league reliever for organizational depth for (essentially) nothing.

03/30/23 Kansas City Royals traded LHP Richard Lovelady to Atlanta Braves.

DRAW: A major league reliever for AAA depth for (essentially) nothing was the initial plan, but Atlanta waived him within two weeks and he spent the season with the Oakland A's, who claimed him. He is currently a free agent.

05/30/23 Toronto Blue Jays traded RHP Kelvin Perez to Atlanta Braves.

DRAW: Obtained for almost nothing, Perez was waived after the season.

06/06/23 Tampa Bay Rays traded RHP Ben Heller to Atlanta Braves for Future Considerations.

WIN: Heller made 19 appearances this last season, pitching to a 3.86 ERA.

06/18/23 Atlanta Braves traded RHP Yacksel Ríos to Oakland Athletics for cash.

WIN: The 30 year-old Ríos put up a 37.80 ERA for Oakland, allowing seven earned runs in just 1.2 innings, before going on the IL for season-ending shoulder surgery. He has since signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets.

07/24/23 Colorado Rockies traded RHP Pierce Johnson to Atlanta Braves for RHP Victor Vodnik and RHP Tanner Gordon.

WIN: Johnson was one of the best relievers in baseball after the trade and subsequently was re-signed by Atlanta.

07/24/23 Texas Rangers traded LHP Taylor Hearn to Atlanta Braves for cash.
07/30/23 Kansas City Royals traded SS Nicky Lopez to Atlanta Braves for LHP Taylor Hearn.

WIN: Grouping these together, because they make sense. Anthopoulos essentially traded cash for Nicky Lopez, who provided some much needed veteran depth and plus defense down the stretch (plus a little pitching, too).

08/01/23 Colorado Rockies traded LHP Brad Hand to Atlanta Braves for RHP Alec Barger.

DRAW: While this trade wasn't nearly as fruitful as the Pierce Johnson trade, Hand was able to serve as a warm body that was left handed down the stretch for Atlanta and the cost wasn't too much to bear - Barger pitched to a 11.66 ERA in his 14.2 innings after the trade with the AA Hartford Yard Goats.

11/16/23 Chicago White Sox traded LHP Aaron Bummer to Atlanta Braves for RHP Michael Soroka, LHP Jared Shuster, SS Nicky Lopez, SS Braden Shewmake and RHP Riley Gowens.

Okay, now we're officially in the "too soon to tell" category...but getting a usable major league piece with multiple years of control for players that you were going to non-tender sure feels like a WIN, doesn't it?

11/17/23 Atlanta Braves traded RHP Nick Anderson to Kansas City Royals for cash.

Exchanging a non-tender candidate for anything of value is a WIN, right?

11/17/23 Atlanta Braves traded RHP Kyle Wright to Kansas City Royals for RHP Jackson Kowar.
12/03/23 Atlanta Braves traded RHP Cole Phillips and RHP Jackson Kowar to Seattle Mariners for LHP Marco Gonzales, OF Jarred Kelenic and 1B Evan White.
12/05/23 Atlanta Braves traded LHP Marco Gonzales and cash to Pittsburgh Pirates for Player To Be Named Later.
12/08/23 Los Angeles Angels traded C Max Stassi and SS David Fletcher to Atlanta Braves for 1B Evan White and LHP Tyler Thomas.
12/09/23 Atlanta Braves traded C Max Stassi and cash to Chicago White Sox for Player To Be Named Later.

The Jarred Kelenic trade tree is fascinating, but without having actually played him in left field yet, all we can really confirm is that it feels pretty good. Atlanta, in essence, took on fifteen million in 2024 salary commitments (and some lingering 2025 money for David Fletcher) to get five years of team control of a former top prospect in Kelenic. Calling this a WIN, subject to change.

12/15/23 San Diego Padres traded DH Matt Carpenter, LHP Ray Kerr and cash to Atlanta Braves for CF Drew Campbell.

WIN: Multiple seasons of Ray Kerr for some dead 2024 money for Carpenter (and St. Louis just lowered that 2024 money by signing Carpenter, who was released three days later, to a minimum salary deal.)

12/30/23 Atlanta Braves traded SS Vaughn Grissom to Boston Red Sox for LHP Chris Sale and cash.

WIN: A blocked former prospect that was defensively limited for, after the prototypical AA extension, either two or three seasons (if the club option's picked up) of a pitcher that still has top strikeout stuff? That's absolutely a win.
