Braves Send Charlie Morton to the Mound, Trying to Win Series Against Marlins

The Atlanta Braves are looking for a win in the series finale against the Miami Marlins

The Atlanta Braves just couldn’t figure out Miami Marlins starter Max Meyer yesterday en route to a 5-1 loss that evened the series between the two teams at one win each.

Today’s a chance for either team to win the series, with Braves veteran Charlie Morton facing off against Marlins Opening Day starter Jesús Luzardo.

Lineups for the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins on Sunday, April 14th

Here's how Atlanta will line up for the contest:

RF Ronald Acuña Jr
2B Ozzie Albies
3B Austin Riley
1B Matt Olson
DH Marcell Ozuna
LF Adam Duvall
SS Orlando Arcia
CF Michael Harris II
C Chadwick Tromp

For Morton, his start to the 2024 season has gone exactly to expectations - 11.1 innings with a 3.18 ERA. He’s been a bit walk-prone early this year, giving seven free passes (as compared to ten strikeouts), but he’s gone into the sixth inning in both of his starts so far.

Morton has plenty of history with this Marlins lineup, and it’s some of the stars that have had the most success. Two-time batting champ Luis Arraez is batting .364 in eleven at-bats off of Morton, while Jazz Chisholm Jr. is batting .360 with three homers and ten RBIs in 25 at-bats. Watch out for LF/DH Bryan De La Cruz., as well; he’s put up a .308 average in thirteen career at-bats off of Morton.

Here's Miami’s lineup:

2B Luis Arraez
1B Josh Bell
3B Jake Burger
CF Jazz Chisholm Jr.
DH Bryan De La Cruz
RF Jesus Sánchez
LF Nick Gordon
SS Vidal Bruján
C Nick Fortes

Luzardo, making his fourth start of the year, has allowed more runs in each outing on the season. His last time out, against the New York Yankees, he was tagged for seven runs on eight hits in just 4.2 innings, inflating his season numbers to an 0-2 record and 7.20 ERA.

Braves backup catcher Chadwick Tromp has seen Luzardo well in the past, going 3-4 with two RBIs off of him, while Marcell Ozuna is batting .286 with a homer, Austin Riley is batting .267 with an RBI, and Ozzie Albies is batting .300. Watch for first baseman Matt Olson - not the greatest against lefties, he’s got one of the two Atlanta homers off of Luzardo but is batting just .067 in fifteen career at-bats.
