Takeaways: Braves rally in the tenth to sweep the Phillies

After not scoring in the first nine innings, the Braves scored five in the top of the tenth to seal the victory

The Braves swept the rain-shortened two game series against the Phillies with a 5-1 win in ten innings.

Elder Continues to Look Wise Beyond His Years

Bryce Elder has been such a boost to the Braves rotation this year. Although he is young, he has pitched like an experienced veteran. Elder’s first-ever start against the Phillies was today, and he kept them off-balance the whole game. He looked great again today as he went seven solid innings of shutout ball. He struck out six and gave up just three hits.

Elder has been a steady presence and looked like a top-of-the-rotation pitcher all season for the Braves. The anticipated return of Max Fried in July will add additional depth to the Braves starting rotation.

The Offense Came Alive in Extras

The red-hot Braves offense that dismantled the Rockies was a bit quieter in Philadelphia. After scoring forty runs in four games against Colorado, the Braves were held to no runs and only three hits through the first nine innings of play.

That changed in the tenth inning.

The Braves came through clutch in the top of the tenth inning, scoring five runs. Sam Hilliard began the inning as the runner placed on second base. A Michael Harris II single scored Hilliard to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.

With two outs and runners on second and third, Kyle Schwarber missed a ball in left field off the bat of Austin Riley that should have ended the inning.

That put the Braves up 3-0, and they weren’t finished. Marcell Ozuna launched a two-run home run to left field to give the Braves a 5-0 lead.

The Phillies got one of those runs back in the bottom of the tenth, but Nick Anderson put them away to end the game.

With the win, the Braves have won eight straight games and now have a record of 48-26.

What's next for the Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves, winners of eight straight, travel to Cincinnati to take on the equally as hot Cincinnati Reds, who have a long win streak of their own. It's only the fifth time since 1901 that two teams with active winning streaks of eight or more games have faced off.

Game one in the series is set for 6:40 PM ET, with RHP AJ Smith-Shawver facing off with Reds righty Luke Weaver. The game broadcast with Voice of the Braves Brandon Gaudin is available inside Braves Country on Bally Sports Southeast and is available on MLB.TV outside of the broadcast area. The radio call, with Ben Ingram, is available locally on 680 AM/93.7 FM The Fan or outside the Atlanta market on the Atlanta Braves Radio Network or MLB.com.
