What New Season Milestone Says About Braves Michael Harris II's Season

Sunday night featured a new career moment for Michael Harris II. The Atlanta Braves' center fielder belted a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning for his 21st of the season, now the most he's hit in a season.

Beyond just the new career high, this 21st home run speaks volumes to how he's elevated him game over the last year.

When reached 20 home runs in a season for the first time last season, it came on Sept. 26, just as the season was winding down. He now has more over a month earlier in the season. At his current pace, would finish with about 27 home runs.

It's a key sign that the adjustments he made last season, and the work he has put in since then, have been making a world of difference.

The changes are just reflected in home runs, however. Plenty of stats tell the story.

If he finished the season today, the following stats would be the second best for a season: batting average (.294), slugging (.493), OPS (.813), OPS+ (120), doubles (30) and RBIs (71).

He still has a strong chance of setting career highs in all of these categories if he has a strong finish to the season. As for counting stats, he should be able to set new personal records. He needs 13 total hits and four more doubles for a new career best in those categories.

It's been a lot of listing of stats, but this is a sport where the stats do a lot of the talking. We haven't even gotten to the part where this bat complements his defense, which is considered to be one of the best the centerfield position.

At 25 years old, he's still providing that the best has yet to come. Arguably, he should have been an All-Star this season, but it wasn't meant to be this time around. Heading into 2027, assuming we get an All-Star Game, expectations will be higher from the jump at a tough position to stand out at.

To make a comparison, Ozzie Albies was rightfully rewarded for his performance this season with an All-Star nod. He made it happen while playing second base. It's just not as crowded a position for consideration as the outfield, even when they're all grouped together.

Harris can still receive his flowers for this season in some way. He may not win awards, such as the MVP or the Gold Glove, but he could receive votes. For the latter award that was used as an example, he could easily be a finalist. The same goes for the Silver Slugger Award.

That's a top-three finish. While it's not the same as winning, and Harris likely won't and shouldn't see it as the same, it would still speak to the performance.

When you're one of three players who are considered finalists for an award, it means you did something very right that year. If he isn't a finalist for the Gold Glove or the Silver Slugger, then there is nothing else to say besides that he's been snubbed in nearly every way possible.

Perhaps he has a strong end of August and electric September, and it's not even an issue. Seasons come with their ebbs and flows, but Harris has emerged as a much higher-caliber ballplayer, and the Braves should be excited for what is to come - even for what's left for this season.
