Braves Briefing: Atlanta takes prep infielder in latest MLB Mock Draft

As we are just over a month from the MLB Draft, more mock drafts are popping up around the baseball corner of the internet.

This week, MLB.com published a first round mock and had the Atlanta Brvaes taking a prospect from the high school ranks with the 24th pick. The projection had Atlanta selecting Kevin McGonigle, a second baseman and shortstop from Monsignor Bonner high school in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania who is currently committed to Auburn University.

Here's what the reasoning for the selection was:

The Braves would love a shot at (Bryce) Eldridge but likely will have to look at other prep position players such as Emerson, McGonigle, and fellow shortstops Martin, George Lombard Jr., and Sammy Stafura.

The first round of the MLB Draft is on July 9th.

We welcomed Sam Peebles to the Braves Today crew last week and his debut story for the site was a deep dive into Ozzie Albies.

His career slash line before this season was .271/.322/.470. This equates to an OPS+ of 106 (6.0 percent better than league average). He also has 23 career defensive runs saved (DRS), 13.8 Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR), 17 Outs Above Average (OAA), and 12 Runs Saved Above Average (RAA). Just as a refresher, a 0 in OAA, UZR, DRS, and RAA would all be considered league average.
He has also been good on the base paths for his career. If you look at Ultimate Base Running, which factors in all base running outside of steals, he had a career 14.1 prior to this season. Again, a 0 would be league average.
He also had a career average of 3.7 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) per 150 games played before this season started.
