Did the Atlanta Braves do enough to replace Dansby Swanson?

Did the Atlanta Braves do enough to replace Dansby Swanson?

The Atlanta Braves are still in a tough situation this season with the departure of Dansby Swanson, their former shortstop, who left the team during free agency, signing a seven-year, $177M contract with the Chicago Cubs. Swanson had been a key veteran for the Braves, but rumors suggest that he was not as happy with the team as everyone thought. Whatever the reason, the Braves now find themselves without an everyday shortstop.

The Braves initially had high hopes for their young player, Vaughn Grissom, to fill the shortstop position. However, it seems that Grissom has not performed as expected, leaving the team in a difficult spot. Orlando Arcia, a veteran infielder, is expected to take over the position in the interim. While he may not be a long-term solution, Arcia brings valuable depth to the team and is backed up by veteran Ehire Adrianza.

The Braves have taken a long view in their approach to filling the shortstop position, recognizing that injuries and unexpected setbacks can happen at any time. By keeping Adrianza on the Opening Day roster, they can avoid losing him to free agency, which would reduce the team's depth and make them more vulnerable to unforeseen circumstances. That veteran depth is assuredly top of mind for Atlanta - the Braves used six different players at second base after Ozzie Albies broke his foot and missed (essentially) the rest of the season.

While Arcia may not have the offensive firepower of Swanson, he is a solid defender who can hold his own defensively. It remains to be seen whether he can step up and perform consistently at the plate, but many fans and analysts have their doubts. Some are hoping that Grissom or Braden Shoemake will be called up to take over the position soon, with some thinking that whichever prospect shortstop is promoted will likely start at least 100 games over the course of the season.

Overall, the Braves are in a challenging position without Swanson, and it remains to be seen how well they will be able to adapt. With the team's depth and veteran leadership, however, they are well-positioned to weather the storm and come out stronger on the other side.
