The most notable change to the lineup is Sam Hilliard in centerfield, taking the place of Michael Harris II, who was put on the 10-day IL this afternoon with a lower back strain. After his hot performance at the plate last night, Sean Murphy gets a 2nd consecutive start behind the plate, with Marcell Ozuna in the lineup as DH and Travis d'Arnaud getting the day off.
Starting for the Braves is Jared Shuster. The lefty prospect, who was sent down after his Sunday start versus Washington but was an injury replacement for Collin McHugh, on the IL with "shoulder inflammation", makes his second career start in MLB. The Padres should prove a tougher matchup than the Nationals, with a two through six of Juan Soto, Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, Jake Cronenworth, and Matt Carpenter. Shuster went 4.2 innings with six hits, four runs, and five walks to only one strikeout against Washington on Sunday, ultimately taking the loss in Atlanta's only defeat of the young season.
Opposing Atlanta is RHP Nick Martinez. Appearing twice against Atlanta - once in relief back in 2017 and once as a starter last season, Martinez is officially 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA against Atlanta. His only start, coming last April during Atlanta's first road trip of the year, saw him give up seven hits and four runs - three via homer - with four walks and three strikeouts in a 5-2 Braves victory. Ozzie Albies, Matt Olson, and Marcell Ozuna all left the yard, while three of Atlanta's other four hits were doubles.
Martinez is coming off of a 4-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies to open his season, where he gave up six hits and four runs - two on a home run by Charlie Blackmon - with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Throwing 101 pitches, but only 69 for strikes, he took the loss as the Padres could only get across one run, coming on a Xander Bogaerts sac fly in the 8th inning to score Ha-Seong Kim.
How to Watch
Tonight's the debut of Atlanta on 2023's version of Friday Night Baseball on Apple TV+ - unlike 2022, the series will NOT be free on Apple TV+, which costs $6.99 per month for the Friday night doubleheaders and other baseball content produced in conjunction with Major League Baseball. Apple TV+ does offer a 7-day free trial, so if you're only here for Atlanta, that would cover you for tonight but Atlanta does also play on Apple TV on April 21st (home vs Astros) and May 19th (home vs Mariners).
We don't have a 2nd half of the season schedule, but a newly announced promotional offer will cover all of the Braves' appearances in the 1st half of the 2023 season.
