Braves bring back three, including catcher Chadwick Tromp, on minor-league deals

The Braves signed some recently non-tendered players for minor league depth

The Atlanta Braves have signed three free agents to minor league deals, per the team's transaction tracker

Catcher Chadwick Tromp, utilityman Luke Williams, and minor league free agent reliever Grant Holmes are all returning on minor league deals.

Tromp, 28, was one of seven players non-tendered by Atlanta last week. In the two years since he was selected off of waivers from the San Francisco Giants, Tromp has played in a grand total of seven games in Atlanta, collecting five hits and four RBIs in 16 at-bats.

The majority of Tromp's playtime has come in AAA Gwinnett, where he's played in 135 games over the last two seasons as the team's primary catcher. By signing him to a minor league deal, Atlanta keeps their emergency third catcher in the organization but also does not need to use a 40-man spot on him at this time.

Williams, 27, was selected off of waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers in June of 2023. He spent the rest of the season on Atlanta's bench, getting nine total at-bats in seven games. Williams is on the roster for his defensive versatility and pinch-running ability, with previous experience at every position but catcher and 17 stolen bases in 23 attempts to his name. If Atlanta needs to call him up to the 26-man roster, he does have one minor league option remaining.)

(Interestingly, the transaction tracker lists RHP Lucas Williams, who last played in 2017, but we've confirmed it is Luke Williams that was signed.)

Holmes, 27, was a 1st round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2014 that spent the 2023 season in Gwinnett's bullpen. Pitching in 50 games, he's 7-3 with a 3.54 ERA, collecting 13 saves. In his 61 innings, he struck out 74 batters (10.9 K/9) while walking only 26 and allowing a mere five homers. He's a majority two-pitch pitcher, with a 94-mph fastball buttressed by a 84 mph curveball. He's never pitched in the major leagues, having reached AAA on three separate occasions with the Oakland A's.
