Cardinals Star Surprisingly Listed As Offseason Trade Candidate By MLB Insider

Could the Cardinals actually trade one of their biggest stars this upcoming offseason?

The St. Louis Cardinals are going to have plenty of rumors swirling around the club throughout this upcoming offseason.

St. Louis struggled this season and had the worst season in recent memory. This was extremely surprising as the club was loaded with talent but just never was able to get on track. Injuries and inconsistent play derailed the season and now the Cardinals will need to go back to the drawing board and figure out their next plan.

The Cardinals will be extremely active this offseason as they try to get back to the postseason next year. St. Louis already has stated that it will be looking to add at least three hurlers to the starting rotation. It's unclear exactly what will happen but it is clear it will be an interesting offseason for the Cardinals.

St. Louis will be busy and one player that surprisingly has been listed as a possible trade candidate is star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan on the "Baseball Is Dead" podcast.

"I'm extremely excited as I'm putting together my super nerdy spreadsheet that I have all year, Passan said. "I have a spreadsheet that says trade candidates and in trade candidates it says Juan Soto, Tyler Glasnow, Pete Alonso, Shane Bieber, Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Max Fried, Paul Goldschmidt, Brandon Drury, Mike Trout, Alex Verdugo, (and) Willy Adames. There are a lot of big names who could be moved this offseason."

Goldschmidt found his name in trade rumors ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline but it would be very surprising if he were to be moved this offseason. Rumblings of talks of a possible contract extension have been floated around so it is more likely that Goldschmidt is signed to a longer deal this offseason than traded away.

If the two sides are unable to come to terms on a new deal then it certainly is possible that he could be moved elsewhere. It would be very surprising to see the 2022 National League Most Valuable Player elsewhere in 2024 but it is something to look out for.
