Could Reunion Be On Way For Cardinals? One St. Louis Insider Suggests Fireballer Could Be Back

What should the Cardinals do this offseason?

The St. Louis Cardinals will have plenty of holes on the roster to fill this upcoming offseason.

St. Louis has struggled this season and currently is in last place in the National League Central standings with an abysmal 68-88 record. If anyone had suggested the Cardinals would be at the bottom of the National League Central standings with a week to go in the season before the campaign began, no one would believe them. St. Louis never has been able to get on track and it has led to one of the most underwhelming seasons in recent memory.

The Cardinals ultimately became one of the biggest sellers ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline, but there could be at least one reunion or two on the way this upcoming offseason. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Lynn Worthy held a question-and-answer segment with Cardinals fans Monday and one fan asked if any of Jordan Hicks, Jordan Montgomery, or Jack Flaherty could be back with the club in 2024 and he didn't shut the idea down.

"I wouldn't be surprised if they had some level of interest in all three," Worthy said. "If I had to guess which I thought was most likely, I'd guess Hicks. But that guess will probably come back to haunt me later."

Hicks likely makes the most sense of the three because St. Louis held contract extension conversations with the fireballer right up until he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. There was interest on both sides to get a deal done, although they couldn't come to terms. It wouldn't be too surprising to see the two sides get back to the negotiating table this offseason and come to terms on a deal. Montgomery or Flaherty would be nice, as well, but there's no way for sure to know what will happen.
