Justin Steele remains undefeated as the Chicago Cubs avoided the sweep, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 10-4 in their final game at Wrigley Field. It also helped to have contributions from Yan Gomes and Patrick Wisdom with both hitting two-run homers in the Wednesday night win.

Steele pitched six strong innings and gave up three runs to the visitors, ending his stretch of 14 straight starts by allowing two or fewer earned runs. He also gave up seven hits and three walks in the victory.

Having been on the injured list since May 1, Gomes came back to the lineup and slammed his sixth homer of the season in the fourth inning. He added two more hits to the squad's victory.

Wisdom's contribution on the night came in the third with a man on and took away St. Louis' 2-1 lead.

The Cardinals' three-game win streak came to an end as right-hander Patrick Montgomery (2-5) gave up six runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings pitched. Even St. Louis' two biggest bats weren't as productive. Paul Goldschmidt singled and scored on Nolan Arenado's two-out triple. Willson Contreras- a former Cub himself- hit an RBI single to make it 2-0.

Steele's 6-0 record made him the first six-game winner in the National League. The 27-year-old pitched 49,1 innings with an ERA of 1.82. The man was once known for giving massive home runs and now he's turned himself into a Cy Young contender.

Gomes also showed that his recovery will be a benefit to the Cubs. Slugging .247/.297/.420, he roared back to the lineup with a strong longball after a leadoff walk to Trey Mancini in the fourth.

Christopher Morel provided. a much-needed infusion to the Cubs' bats and he did so with a game-tying solo homer in the sixth. The 106-mph rocket went 422 feet and his reaction to it was energy needed to Chicago.

Chicago ended its homestand 3-3 and travel on the road to Target Field for a four-game road series against the Minnesota Twins. The first game is Friday, May 12 with a 7:10 p.m. CT first pitch.
