Cubs Could Pounce on Top Free Agents With Toronto Blue Jays Seemingly Out

The Chicago Cubs might have just gotten the opening to land some of their free agent targets that they were hoping for this offseason.

Throughout the offseason, the Chicago Cubs have been seen as the team who's going to be aggressive and overhaul their roster.

They financially are able to spend plenty of money, residing in a large market and being one of the biggest brands in the sport.

However, the front office has not shown a willingness to hand out lucrative long-term contracts that the top free agents are looking to receive.

This has resulted in a lackluster offseason overall as the Cubs get ready for Spring Training.

Chicago could still get something done that would make them stand out as having one of the best free agency periods out of any Major League team, but it likely will only come on their terms if asking prices of these available players starts to crater.

Maybe that is starting to happen.

According to what the Toronto Blue Jays general manager, Ross Atkins, told Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic, it seems like they are done adding players this offseason.

"At this point, additions that would be of significance would mean some level of subtraction. We feel good about the team that we have. Feel good about the work that's been done over the last five offseasons ...," he said when asked about the remaining free agents.

This is huge for the Cubs.

The Blue Jays were seen as one of the clear favorites to land Cody Bellinger and re-sign Matt Chapman.

With them seemingly out of the picture, that gives their agent, Scott Boras, much less leverage than if there were multiple suitors.

If Chicago were to land both of these stars, their roster would look completely different and they'd truly have a chance to contend in the National League.

Chapman addresses their third base issue, while also adding another solid offensive player, and Bellinger gives them defensive versatility and a power bat.

Adding both is likely a pipe dream. The Cubs could use just one of these players.

But maybe getting both is not so farfetched if the market is truly cratering for these free agents as Spring Training is getting underway.
