Bellinger to Yankees Rumors Heating Up as Cubs Assess Options

In this story:
After missing the 2023 MLB Playoffs, Chicago Cubs ownership and the front office have been steadfast on their stance regarding building a contender for years to come.
They were close this year, but as it's been repeatedly stated, close isn't good enough for the Cubs.
2023 is being viewed as a failure and will be used as motivation for the front office to build a contending roster around what is currently in place.
Star outfielder Cody Bellinger is a huge piece to that puzzle after becoming Chicago's best hitter during the regular season.
The Cubs would love to re-sign him in free agency and have him be a building block within the clubhouse, but after putting together an MVP type of season, he will likely command a lucrative contract.
One of those teams who could be interested in shelling out a large sum of money for Bellinger is the New York Yankees.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post highlighted how the Yankees are doing their own set of evaluations this offseason so they can get back into the playoffs.
The last time New York won the World Series was in 2009, after they spent heavily to acquire star players in free agency.
"To that end, the most obvious free agent to pursue remains Cody Bellinger, in a market short of obvious offensive stars," Heyman writes.
This isn't the first time that the star outfielder has been linked to the Yankees.
But it's clear now those rumors are starting to heat up.
Heyman is connected in New York. This story comes on the heels of club higher-ups meeting to discuss future strategy and how they want to build their roster.
Chicago has shown a lack of desire to hand out long-term contracts like the ones that Bellinger could be offered.
Whether they stick with that organizational philosophy or acquiesce to retain the important slugger will be figured out once the offseason officially begins.
