The Chicago Cubs authored one of the biggest turnarounds this season, turning into playoff contenders after they got off to a slow start. Instead of selling at the trade deadline for the third consecutive year, the front office was aggressive and added pieces to help the suddenly resurgent Cubs make a run at the playoffs.

One player they attempted to get was New York Mets star Pete Alonso.

"The Brewers and Cubs were among the clubs that talked with the Mets about Alonso prior to this year’s Trade Deadline," reported MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

Ultimately, Chicago wasn't able to pry the slugging first baseman away from New York at the deadline, however he could be a major target of there's during the offseason.

According to Feinsand's article, multiple executives think the Mets could move their star during the winter to get back established players.

"Trading Alonso is likely the most prudent course of action if the Mets plan to take next season as a soft reset year," one executive said. "The return they can expect to receive for one year of Alonso at his projected salary won’t be huge, but that’s still likely to be their best approach."

Whether or not the Cubs are willing to give up assets for potentially one year of Alonso is another question.

They have one of the top pipelines in baseball, so giving up assets would not hurt the future of the franchise. Chicago's own upcoming free agent, Cody Bellinger, will be one of the hottest names on the market and they could prioritize keeping him with a large financial commitment over adding a potential rental type player.

What is known is that the Cubs' front office inquired about bringing the slugger onto the team for this season. The interest could still be there going forward.

Feinsand writes, "Given the lack of impact first basemen on this year’s free-agent market, more clubs would likely jump into the fray if Alonso became available."
