The Chicago Cubs have a big offseason ahead of them as they look to build a playoff contending team.

The organization knows it, the players know it and the fans know it.

While much of the conversation has centered around the Cubs' need to re-sign their star slugger Cody Bellinger, new developments always present themselves when the offseason begins.

One of the biggest names in the MLB could be made available for trade when the year ends.

A.J. Preller, President of Baseball Operations for the San Diego Padres, didn't shut down potential rumors that Juan Soto could be dealt if they can't get an extension done.

"We've never been a group that says no to anything. I wouldn't read into that. That's just kind of the way we operate," he said when asked about those rumors.

With the potential that Soto could become available, Michael Cerami of Bleacher Nation is reporting that Chicago have interest in trading for the superstar.

He reports, "After doing a little digging, I’ve heard from multiple sources that the Cubs’ interest in Juan Soto this offseason is real."

That is quite the development.

The 24-year-old is one of the best players in baseball.

His wRC+ is fourth in the league since 2018 with a 154 figure. That trails only Mike Trout, Aaron Judge and Yordan Alvarez, while sitting ahead of Mookie Betts.

What would it take for the Cubs to get him?

Cerami isn't sure as of now.

"Although I have heard that the Cubs’ interest is real, I have nothing to report in terms of what they’d be willing to give up (or what the Padres would be seeking in return)," he writes.

If Soto is made available, Chicago should do everything in their power to acquire the superstar.

Yes, Bellinger had a great year, but that could be an outlier compared to the three down seasons he had prior to joining the Cubs.

Handing out a massive contract to him could be a major risk if his production regresses.

That hasn't been the case with Soto, who has been one of the best players since debuting in the Major Leagues.
