In this story:
The Chicago Cubs have set their pitching probables for their series with the Detroit Tigers that starts on Monday at Comerica Park in Detroit.
First pitch for Monday’s and Tuesday’s games is at 5:40 p.m. central. First pitch for Wednesday’s finale is 12:10 p.m.
Javier Assad (2-2, 3.11) is expected to start Monday’s game. He claimed a no-decision in his last start against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday, when he was moved into the spot that was to be taken by Marcus Stroman, who is now out indefinitely with a rib cartilage fracture.
Assad threw six innings against the White Sox, giving up four hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out four. He is 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA in his last games, three of which have been starts.
Alex Faedo (2-4, 5.16) is expected to start for the Tigers. The right-hander will make his 10th start of the season and is coming off a no-decision against Minnesota on Tuesday. He went five innings, giving up just one hit and no runs. He walked one and struck out six. He is 2-3 with a 5.45 ERA in last seven starts.
Drew Smyly (9-8, 4.92) is expected to start for the Cubs on Tuesday. He is back in the rotation after a move to the bullpen the past two weeks. He’s pitched one inning in each of his last three appearances and took the win against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.
He last started on Aug. 7 against the New York Mets. He took the loss, going five innings and giving up eight hits and seven earned runs.
In his last four starts dating back to July 8, he has given up at least four earned runs and lost three of those starts.
Right-hander Reese Olson (2-5, 4.83) is set to start for the Tigers. He’ll make his 15th start of the season and only went 2.2 inning in his last start on Wednesday against Minnesota. He gave up eight hits, four earned runs and a walk against three strikeouts. He is 1-3 with a 5.63 ERA in his last seven games, six of which were starts.
Right-hander Jameson Taillon (7-8, 5.56) will start for the Cubs on Wednesday.
Even though Taillon took the loss against the Kansas City Royals on Friday, he pitched much better than his last outing against Toronto on Aug. 13.
Against the Royals, he threw six innings, giving up six hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. Against Toronto he lasted just three innings and gave up eight hits and eight earned runs.
In his last seven starts Taillon is 4-2 with a 4.46 ERA.
Tarik Skubal (3-2, 3.76) is set to make his ninth start this season for the Tigers on Wednesday. He won his last start against Cleveland on Friday, going six innings and giving up three hits and one earned run. He struck out seven and walked one. He is 3-2 with a 4.19 ERA in his last seven starts.
