There are still some other additions the Chicago Cubs need to make before they can be considered a true contender like they set out to be at the beginning of the offseason.

Despite whiffing on some of the biggest names in free agency, the front office has been able to piece together solid signings that have improved the roster overall.

Still, there are some holes that need to be addressed.

Rotation depth seems to be the main one on the pitching staff side of things.

Landing Japanese star Shota Imanaga certainly gives them another top-of-the-rotation guy on paper to pair with Justin Steele, but, outside of those two, there are some questions about those who slot in behind them.

That's why the Cubs could potentially be interested in pulling off a blockbuster trade to land an elite starter.

However, if they don't want to meet the potential asking price, they are reportedly monitoring two All-Star pitchers in the free agency market according to MLB insider Jon Morosi.

"The Padres, Pirates, Twins, Cubs and Rays are among clubs keeping tabs on rotation depth options, including free agents Noah Syndergaard and Michael Lorenzen," he posted on social media.

Of the two options, Michael Lorenzen would certainly be better than Noah Syndergaard.

Lorenzen is coming off his first All-Star selection with the Detroit Tigers last season, posting an ERA of 3.58 across 18 starts before being shipped to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The right-hander wants to be a starting pitcher and he would certainly give Chicago the depth that they're looking to add.

Syndergaard is coming off a bad year where he had a 6.50 ERA with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cleveland Guardians.

Once one of the most dominant pitchers in the game, the 31-year-old has had his struggles with performance on the field and health lately.

If the Cubs aren't interested in being aggressive in the trade market, adding a player like Lorenzen or Syndergaard will be important as they navigate the season.
