Way Too Early Look at Who Chicago Cubs Should Pursue in Free Agency

In this story:
With the Chicago Cubs fighting for their playoff lives down the stretch of this season, there aren't many people ready to close the book and start looking at 2024.
However, it's never too early to look at who some targets could be in the offseason to try and get the Cubs back into true contender status.
Shohei Ohtani is the clear gem of the class. It's extremely rare when the best player in the league and one of the best that's ever lived hits the open market.
It should come as no surprise that Chicago should have him on their wish list. In a major market with deep pockets and a staple franchise in baseball history, they should make a major run at the Japanese phenom who would address their pitching issues.
The Cubs' own Japanese phenom Seiya Suzuki is under contract until 2026 and could be a big player in persuading Ohtani to join the club. They are both the same age and have played together on the Japanese national team.
Here are some other players Chicago should go after in the offseason.
Starting Pitching
Their own Marcus Stroman will be hitting free agency and could command a big price. He's struggled lately and might not be worth bringing back for a large contract. His situation is one to monitor. The club could also pick up the $16 million team option for veteran Kyle Hendricks, but his form has eroded the past couple years.
Aaron Nola is someone they should consider. The issues the right hander has had recently is with the longball, but in a pitcher friendly Wrigley Field, that could be reduced. Nola still has a high strike out rate and could be a top end starter for the Cubs.
Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery and Eduardo Rodriguez are all lefty starters putting together really good years who could be targets as well.
Relief Pitching
Josh Hader is the best on the market after his strong year with the San Diego Padres. He'll likely be asking for a big contract, so flamethrower righty Jordan Hicks could be a cheaper option to pursue.
Hitting
Resigning Cody Bellinger is a must for Chicago. He's been their best hitter and provides incredible defense all over the field. The slugger has returned to MVP form and has earned what likely will be a big contract.
Catcher is the biggest hole on the roster. Unfortunately, this is not a strong catcher class. Mitch Garver and Omar Narvaez are the best available free agents.
There are plenty of ways the Cubs can improve their roster heading into the 2024 season. Free agency will be big for this team as they attempt to get back into contender status.
