In a big boost to the Chicago Cubs farm system, outfielder Brennen Davis made his return to Triple-A and wasted no time making an impact.

In this story:

Chicago Cubs top prospect Brennen Davis completed his rehab assignment and was back in the Iowa Cubs lineup for the first time since early May after undergoing back surgery. The outfielder was initially feared to be out for the rest of the minor league season but recovered exceptionally well.

Davis wasted little time getting going in his return as the 22-year-old reached base three times in his return. The 2021 Futures Game MVP was hit by a pitch, walked, and hit a line-drive solo home run in his return to cap off a 1-for-3 day.

It's a very encouraging step forward for both Davis and the Cubs as the righty was potentially a summer call-up option before suffering a back injury. The outfielder will be playing in the Arizona Fall League so the hope will be for him to stack some momentum going into spring training where Davis could potentially compete for an outfield spot.

Elsewhere on the farm:

Triple-A: Iowa Cubs (57-67) at Columbus Clippers (71-51): W 4-0

  • Wyatt Short tossed his second five-inning shutout in a row. The 27-year-old struck out five and has a 3.67 ERA in Triple-A.
  • Despite losing both Jeremiah Estrada and Brendon Little, the Iowa bullpen pitched four shutout innings, highlighted by a 1-2-3 inning from Dakota Mekkes.
  • Darius Hill and David Bote each went 1-for-4 with a walk from the one and two spots in the lineup. Hill is batting .333 on the season.

Double-A: Tennessee Smokies (64-57) vs Mississippi Braves (56-64): W 7-2

  • Miguel Amaya made his return to the lineup after dislocating his finger and went 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • Jake Slaughter went 1-for-3 with two walks while Yonathan Perlaza went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Slaughter has an OPS of.950 and Perlaza now has 64 RBI this season.
  • DJ Herz had a wildly up-and-down evening. The lefty struck out six and allowed one hit over his 3.2 innings, but also walked six. Just one earned run scored against Herz.
  • The Smokies bullpen pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, with Zac Leigh, in particular, standing out with 1.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts and just one baserunner to pick up the save.

High-A: South Bend Cubs (68-53) at Lansing Lugnuts (50-71): W 4-3

  • Pete Crow-Armstrong went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. The lefty is batting .296 with a .864 OPS in Single-A.
  • Jordan Nwogu went 1-for-4 but hit his fifth triple of the season. The outfielder has an OPS of over .930 in the month of August.
  • Eight of South Bend's nine starters had at least a base hit. BJ Murray Jr. and Casey Opitz had multiple hits. Opitz in particular had a nice day, clubbing in two doubles in three at-bats. The 24-year-old had a wRC+ of 173 in the two series leading up to Tuesday.
  • Luke Little was absolutely brilliant as the starter tossed four perfect innings with five strikeouts before being pulled. The 24-year-old has a High-A ERA of just 0.90.
  • Jake Reindl struck out three batters over two scoreless innings.  The 25-year-old has struck out over 45% of the batters he's faced across two levels this season and has an ERA below 0.70.

Single-A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans (72-48) at Charleston RiverDogs (80-40): NO GAME

Transactions:

  • The Tennessee Smokies activated Miguel Amaya from the 7-day injured list and placed second baseman, Christian Donahue, on the development list.
