Diamondbacks 2023 Player Review: Nabil Crismatt

The bulk reliever/starting pitcher had a brief stay with the D-backs, consisting of just one appearance.

This article is part of a series of player reviews for the 2023 Arizona Diamondbacks. It was a surprising and marvelous year for the team as they won 84 games to make the postseason. They advanced all the way to Game Five of the World Series before bowing out to the Texas Rangers. There are 54 players in all that had at least one at-bat or pitched at least one inning for the team this past season. They are being presented in reverse order of their aWAR (average WAR-Wins Above Replacement) produced, which is the average of Baseball Reference and Fangraphs WAR. These are their season stories.

Nabil Crismatt 2023 and MLB career stats

Nabil Crismatt stats in his lone game for the D-backs and his 2023 career.

Nabil Crismatt started off the 2023 season with the San Diego Padres. After struggling there and being released in late June, Crismatt signed a minor league contract with the D-backs. Crismatt plied his craft in Reno until August 19th when he was selected to the 40-man roster.

He got into just a single game with the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was the extra-inning thriller between the Cincinnati Reds and D-backs in which Crismatt pitched two innings.

Unfortunately for him and the D-backs, Crismatt would wind up balking in the winning run for the Reds. That spelled the end of his time in the majors with Arizona as he was designated for assignment on August 27th. He cleared waivers and re-signed as a minor league free agent with the D-backs. He finished the minor league season off in Triple-A with the Reno Aces. Upon the season's conclusion, he elected free agency.

2024 Status and Outlook:

As mentioned above, Crismatt is now a free agent that is able to sign with any of the 30 MLB teams. Any team that signs him will have him under control, provided he stays on the 40-man roster, through 2027. That's because the 28-year-old reliever has just over two years of MLB service time. He has a career ERA of 3.76 over 170 innings, so it's likely that some team will attempt to get him back into MLB. It just might take another minor league signing to get Crismatt back into the big leagues.
